Many of the miniatures painted after 1258 are handled in a linear style clearly inspired by Chinese painting utilizing light, feathery brush-strokes colored with delicate tints, rather than the strong contrasting colors of earlier Persian works. Also appearing for the first time were knobby tree trunks with branches like those of a willow pattern plate and an attempt to render the background in three-dimensions by multiplying the number of planes.

This great wealth of inspiring literature gave rise to the emergence of many important miniature schools, each with its own unique style, creating a great diversity of paintings. Miniature Paintings are not just “little pictures”. They have to conform to the permissible sizes laid down by the various Miniature Societies, for instance the overall size can be no more than 7 ins x 5 ins, which includes the external measurement of the frame, a person’s head in a portrait must not exceed 2 ins in height and representations of objects etc. should be no more than one sixth of their original size, to name just a few.
