By Boundary out of Yarn, by Mr. Prospector, Minardi was purchased for $1.65-million by agent Demi O'Byrne at the 1999 Keeneland September yearling sale. The winner ran six furlongs in 1:12.20 on good ground.
The uneasy alliance between Briatore and Minardi did not last long. He tried to sell the team to British American Tobacco but was blocked by Minardi and Rumi and at the end of 1997 he sold his shares to Rumi. He invested heavily in hiring new staff and convinced Gustav Brunner to return as technical director. He ... rehired Cowperthwaite and contracted Cesare Fiorio to be the team's sporting director. Sponsorship was found from drivers Shinji Nakano and Esteban Tuero but results were disappointing.

Minardi revealed that NEiNastran will be used in the design of its monocoque carbon fiber chassis in which a thorough and comprehensive analysis will render everything digitally, down to the smallest fiber. This will allow the chassis to be tested accurately and precisely in FEA to meet stringent safety standards. In addition, a host of design criteria including aerodynamics, flexural stiffness, structural requirements for suspension and engine mounting and weight can be analyzed. This ability to perform highly accurate analyses will enable Minardi designers to wring the most performance out of their designs, reduce their design-to-fabrication cycle time, and result in monetary savings by reducing the number of iterations needed in the thorough testing program prototypes must undergo.
Highlight for Album: Direct Stock Exhibit Mr. Minardi became fascinated with the variations of pictures through computer generated distortion. He invented a process he calls Vidial© which combines video and digital technology to create effects on a screen which he then captures with his camera. Minardi defines Vidial© imagery as "electronic imagery that's moving very fast." His quick reflexes play an important role in enabling him to capture the rapidly moving imagery created on his monitor.
The Minardi team's new major sponsor, Telefonica, the Spanish telecommunications giant, was keen on another Spanish speaking driver to aid its commercial push in South America and the Spanish-speaking world. There had been much speculation during the winter that Telefonica would, in fact, buy the team outright, but no agreement was reached.

A few races later, at the German GP at Hockenheim, Minardi netted a good result. Both Albers and new driver, fellow Dutchman Robert Doornboos, qualified ahead of the Jordans. The more experienced Albers had a fantastic finish, in thirteenth position, while the rookie Doornboos had an eventful race. He collided with Jacques Villenueve, suffered a flat, and then received a stop-go penalty for changing a tire while refueling (you are only allowed to refuel or change a tire during a pitstop, not both).
