Minardi: Team
built 261 days ago
In 1977 Minardi bought a Martini-Renault for Martini but ... did a deal with Ferrari to use Ferrari Dino engines in F2 Ralt chassis. These were driven by Leoni and Gianfranco Brancatelli and the team won its first victory at Misano. The following year the team ran Elio de Angelis, Beppe Gabbiani and Clay Regazzoni in Chevron-Ferraris.

Minardi entered its first race in 1985, competing with one car driven by Pierluigi Martini, using the Ford Cosworth engine without a turbocharger. However as turbochargers were legal in 1985, they were almost a prerequisite, so the Minardi team was so uncompetitive, they were lapped after just a few laps.
The Minardi team needed ten sets of four uprights for a total of 40 parts. (A larger race team might need 15 to 20 sets or a total of 60 to 80 parts.) Several other parts for the car were ... cast at CoastCast at this time. "We actually had the uprights cast in both Ti 6246 modified and Steel 17-4PH, just to compare the two," explains Zucchelli. "The steel is a relatively high strength alloy that would have worked well also, but it is heavier than the titanium."

In 1980 Minardi became a constructor himself, forming the Minardi Team together with the engineers Giacomo Caliri and Luigi Marmiroli. Three brilliant seasons in F2 followed, with drivers like Beppe Gabbiani, Johnny Cecotto, Michele Alboreto (who won the European race at Misano in 1981), Alessandro Nannini and Paolo Barilla.

During 1994 and 1995, Minardi entered into a joint-venture with Scuderia Italia. Unfortunately, a series of commercial difficulties jeopardised the team's future and, by the end of 1996, an alliance formed by Gabriele Rumi and Flavio Briatore acquired a majority stake in the company.
