The Milwaukee Brewers are a Major League Baseball team based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They are in the Central Division of the National League. The Brewers were part of the American League through the 1997 season, after which they switched to the National League. The team was purchased on April 1, 1970 by an ownership group headed by Milwaukee auto dealer Bud Selig. The team was renamed the Brewers to honor Milwaukee's beer-brewing traditions. The team was moved from the American League to the National League in 1998 during baseball's realignment in order to make sure that each league had an even number of teams.

One of the places where the club used to play home games is at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the name of the team originated from the city's bear making industry. The Milwaukee Brewers after spending three decades at County Stadium began lobbying for new ballpark in the 1980's. More than a decade of planning and four and a half years of construction concluded in grand fashion on April 6, 2001 . President George W. Bush threw out the ceremonial first pitch. In the home opening game Milwaukee Brewers star Jeff D'Amico fired a strike to Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin. The Brewers won the game by 5-4. Miller Park was build to replace Milwaukee County Stadium. Miller Brewing Co. bought the naming rights to the ballpark.

For more than three decades the Milwaukee Brewers played at what was generally known as a poor and bland facility, County Stadium. However that changed when the Brewers moved into Miller Park in 2001. The Brewers organization began lobbying for new ballpark in the 1980s. After years of lobbying and political debates approval for new retractable roof stadium for the Brewers came in 1996. On November 9, 1996 groundbreaking ceremonies were held. During the following years, fans attending games at County Stadium were able to watch the new ballpark rise as it was constructed in the parking lot beyond centerfield.

The Milwaukee Brewers' beginnings can be traced to 1964, when the Milwaukee Braves announced that they would be moving to Atlanta. Attempts to prevent the move failed, and in 1965 four prominent Milwaukeeans founded Teams, Inc. to bring Major League Baseball back to their city. Among the four were one-time Braves director Edmund Fitzgerald and car dealer Allen 'Bud' Selig, who was named president of the company. Attempts over the next several years to purchase expansion teams in both the National and American leagues, and even to entice the Chicago White Sox to move to Milwaukee, failed. Teams, Inc. did secure 21 regular season White Sox games and several exhibition games for Milwaukee's County Stadium, the former home of the Braves.
