Between 1950 and 1955, Davis mainly recorded as a leader for Prestige and Blue Note records in a variety of small group settings. Sidemen included Sonny Rollins, John Lewis, Kenny Clarke, Jackie McLean, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, J. J. Johnson, Percy Heath, Milt Jackson and Charles Mingus. Because of his problems with drugs Davis had gained a reputation for unreliability. In the winter of 1953-1954 though, he returned to East St. Louis and locked himself in a guest room in his father's farm for seven days until the drug was fully out of his system.
The first day of recording wrapped up with a slow, balladic sketch which Bill Evans wrote and Miles arranged for the band. Alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley lays out, giving room for one of tenor saxophonist John Coltrane's first great modal solos.

This material features Davis’ nonet lineup including Gerry Mulligan, John Lewis and Max Roach. A departure from the speedy pace of bebop, the music is more textured and there is less emphasis on traditional jazz rhythms. “Moon Dreams” is a standout ballad, with its brilliant brass arrangement and mellow vibe.
