Born in Riga, Latvia in 1948 to Russian parents, Mikhail Baryshnikov first achieved international acclaim as a dancer with the Kirov Ballet, and later as the principal dancer with the American Ballet Theater and the New York City Ballet. Baryshnikov’s introduction to photography was filtered through the constrained lens of Soviet Russia; ... by his late teens he was exposed to the more expressive work of Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Edward Weston, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. In the mid 1980‘s, after encouragement from photographer friends, Baryshnikov began to seriously investigate the world through a viewfinder. Incorporating Weston’s sinuous line, and Bresson’s rendering of the moment, Baryshnikov‘s Dominican Moves captures the sensuality and profound intimacy of his subjects.

Mikhail Baryshnikov knows something about liberty. One night in June 1974, the Russian dancer stepped from a stage in Toronto where he was appearing as a guest star with the Bolshoi Ballet concert group and literally ran to freedom. He stepped outside, followed by a crowd of confused fans, and sprinted to a waiting car that spirited him away from Soviet agents into a life of independence in the United States. Twenty-three years after his sensational defection, Baryshnikov still has a highly attuned sense of what it means to be free. Sitting in Manhattan's Russian Samovar, a restaurant in which this born-again capitalist owns a stake, he is smoking a vintage Partagas Churchill and explaining why his modern dance troupe eschews government grants and corporate donations:

Mikhail Baryshnikov was born in Riga, Latvia, on January 27, 1948. His dance studies began in 1960. He trained for three years at the Riga State Choreographic School until his fifteenth birthday, when he traveled to Leningrad with an advanced student group. The son of Russian parents, Baryshnikov found a congenial home in Leningrad. Motivated to audition for ballet school there, Baryshnikov passed his entrance examination and was accepted into one of Russia's finest ballet training institutions (the Vagarova School). Here he studied with one of the great teachers of this century, Alexander Pushkin.

Mikhail Baryshnikov's fame can be attributed to his unique dancing style, which is like no other ballet dancer. Being short, he worked doubly hard to prove his capability for the roles that he was offered. He was honored with Kennedy Center Honors in 2000. He was ... involved in the creation of the Baryshnikov Arts Center in a new performing arts complex in New York City.
