LYCOS RETRIEVER
Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson is a paradigm example of the phenomenon. Born into a poor African-American family and raised by a single mother on welfare, he has said of his own origins, "I was born in guck, mud. Humiliation." On his own from around age ten, Tyson was not tall, but he was powerfully built and filled with rage, and he learned early how to earn his way by mugging and purse-snatching. By the time he was 13, he had been arrested 38 eight times, finally ending up at the "bad cottage" at Tryon School for Boys in Catskill, New York. Tyson has described the reformatory with a poignant simplicity that a sociologist might envy: "Just a bunch of bad kids no one cared about in a square box."

After admitting to being on rocks and going to rehab, ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson seems to be doing pretty well. He was spotted at the ESPY Awards and at the Urth Cafe in Hollyweird with his new girlfriend last week. He probably met her in rehab.

In 1987, Mike Tyson joined the WVBA and quickly rose through the ranks, defeating puny opponents like Glass Joe and Piston Honda in a single blow. However his first challenge came when he met with "Super Macho Man" Randy Savage. He finally defeated Savage after 2 continues and went on to face Joe "Mr. Sandman" Frazier. The fight against Mr. Sandman proved to be Mike's defining moment in the WVBA World Circuit. When a reporter caught up with him in a restaurant in New York, he asked what exactly he planned to do to the 284 lb. Sandman. Tyson quickly replied "I want to eat his children"...

When the 1990s began, Mike Tyson was simply the most feared fighter the sport of boxing had known. He was 23 years old, and undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, having won the WBC version at 20, and destroyed the claimants of the other authorities just past his 21st birthday. He had an awesome physique, including a phenomenal neck of 19 ½ inches, as thick and strong as some men's thighs. He entered the ring robeless, wearing simple black shorts and black boxing boots, and with an executioner's air of purposeful intent that carried more menace than King Kong and Godzilla combined. Many of his opponents were beaten by fear before any blows were exchanged. Only four of 37 had managed to be still on their feet at the final bell, mostly by subduing any violent feelings of their own in favour of self-preservation.

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was arrested in December 2006 on drunk driving and cocaine possession charges following a police stop outside an Arizona nightclub. Tyson, 40, was pulled over when his BMW nearly struck a sheriff's cruiser after he left a Scottsdale bar. When he failed field sobriety tests, the pugilist was arrested for driving under the influence. A subsequent search turned up two small bags of cocaine in Tyson's pocket and another bag in his car. He was booked into the Maricopa County Sheriff's lockup, where the below mug shots were snapped.

In a four to one vote today, Tuesday Jan 29th, Mike Tyson was denied his Nevada State license. It looks like his fight with Lennox Lewis for the WBO Heavyweight Title is on hold. After his well documented tirade at the recent press conference with Lewis, no one really knows if this match is going to happen in Nevada or elswewhere.
