He has been very articulate about the symbolism and what he proclaims are the profoundly personal nature of his tattoos, featuring among others Arthur Ashe, Che Guevera and Mao Zedong. Tyson has stated that his tattoos are powerful personal totems. Tyson's most recent facial tattoo may be an extraordinary attempt to perform a very public ritual act. Almost all tattoos in traditional tribal cultures are performed as part of a larger elaborate rite of passage between adolescence and adulthood. Tyson may be trying to pull on his "warrior's" face by getting tattooed in such a visible way.

On September 24 2007, Mike Tyson pleaded guilty to possession of narcotics and driving under the influence. He was convicted of these charges in November 2007 and sentenced to 24 hours in jail, 360 hours community service and 3 years probation. Prosecutors had requested a year long jail sentence, but the judge praised Tyson for seeking help with his drug problems.

Mike Tyson lives two or three miles away, in one of the largest and most attractive houses in town, the home of Mrs. Camille Ewald, Cus D'Amato's sister-in-law. The house is at the end of an unpaved, seemingly private road, immaculately kept outside and in, yet comfortable—"I've lived here for seven years now," Tyson says proudly. He leads me through a kitchen and through a parlor room gleaming with trophies he doesn't acknowledge and we sit at one end of an immense living room while, from varying distances, a photographer (from Japan) continues to take candid shots of him he doesn't acknowledge either.
