In the professional category, NCTS champion Mike Skinner was able to pass Pro pole-sitter and professional skateboarder and X Games gold medallist Bucky Lasek on the first lap and retained the top "pro" spot throughout the race. Lasek, the celebrity winner in the 2006 Toyota/Pro Celebrity Race, would later go off into the run-off at Turn 11, temporarily giving the second position to NHRA Sport Compact Champion Scott Kelley. For Skinner, the victory is his fourth in a row after coming into the race with three straight NASCAR truck wins in his Toyota Tundra.
After the breakup of Sidedoor Johnnies, drummer Mike Skinner moved on to start a solo project of recordings that mostly feature instrumental percussion. With occasional additions of guitar noises, violins, and delicate vocals, Bumble Bear Records released Skinner's debut album, Staring into Space, in 2000. The following year, his second album, entitled 8, came out with some additional studio help from Boys Star Library member Chris Bracco. ~ Mike DaRonco, All Music Guide

2006 truck Mike Skinner is expected to run a partial schedule in Sprint Cup in the Bill Davis Racing #27 Toyota Camry in 2008. The car is currently sponsored by Bad Boy Mowers. Rookie Jacques Villeneuve failed to race the #27 into the 2008 Daytona 500. Skinner's rookie season in Sprint Cup was in 1997 and started out on top by winning the pole of the 1997 Daytona 500 in his Lowe's sponsored Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo. He went on to claim Rookie of the Year at the Sprint Cup level. 1998 was uneventful for Skinner, though he helped then teamate Dale Earnhardt hold the lead on his way to victory in the 1998 Daytona 500.
It has been three years since Skinner last ran regularly in the Cup series, five years since the husky Californian ran for Richard Childress, as the late Dale Earnhardt's teammate. A second at Talladega in 2000, a third at Charlotte, two fourths at Daytona and Las Vegas and Martinsville while in his prime, in 1999, after a fourth at Indianapolis, a third at Daytona, and even a third at Watkins Glen the year before. But no wins. And not quite enough to hold that Lowe's sponsorship for Childress, who lost that deal to rival Rick Hendrick and newcomer Jimmie Johnson in 2002.

Skinner ran a quick lap of 157.070 mph in the #5 Toyota Tundra. #30-Todd Bodine, #4-Mike Bliss, #33-Ron Hornaday Jr. and #23-Johnny Benson rounded out the top 5 of the 33 trucks practicing for Saturday night’s Toyota Tundra 200.
Morgan Shepherd, after an impressive qualifying effort subbing for Mike Skinner in the #31 Lowes Chevy, was interviewed by ESPN2 and says he expects to announce something next week. Possibly the #46??(4-24-98)
