Reid was born on January 19, 1940 in Hackney, the son of a lorry driver. He left school at 15 to work as a coalman and after a variety of jobs including working as a merchant seaman and a bricklayer, he fell into bad company. He claimed in his 1999 autobiography to have had a criminal past as a member of a London gang, rubbing shoulders with gangsters such as Reggie and Ronnie Kray and doing time in Brixton prison.

Reid was born in Hackney, east London, and moved with his parents to Tottenham, where he attended Rowland Hill school. He had jobs as a lorry driver and coalman before joining the merchant navy as a steward, and did a number of labouring jobs.

Rising to fame on London's comedy circuit, Reid worked as a stand-up comedian in the 1960s in clubs and cruise liners. His big break came in the seventies in a popular television series, The Comedians, that consisted of short slots by mature comedians.
