LYCOS RETRIEVER
Mike Reid: Guy Ritchie
built 620 days ago
Reid was a cracking actor. When you saw him on EastEnders, it was as if he was in the room with you. And don't make the mistake of thinking that just because his two biggest hits were a soap opera and a children's serial, he wasn't a "proper" thesp. Soaps and kids' shows may not be the hardest jobs to do, but they're the hardest jobs to do well, and Reid did them very well indeed. His credits include Doctor Who, Guy Ritchie's Snatch and stunt work in Spartacus and The Dirty Dozen. If there was any justice in showbiz (and there isn't) he should have played Inspector Truscott in Joe Orton's Loot, Lenny in Pinter's The Homecoming (or McCann in The Birthday Party) and Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Tragedy struck Mike Reid when his son Mark accidentally shot dead his best friend in 1985; five years later he committed suicide by setting himself on fire. A short time afterwards, Mark's daughter Kirsty - Mike's granddaughter - died in her cot aged just six months. Despite personal problems, he continued to act and made his last appearance on EastEnders in December 2005. He went on to appear in Guy Ritchie's gangster movie Snatch before semi-retirement and death in Spain.

After leaving EastEnders, Reid went on to star in the gangster movie, Snatch, directed by Guy Ritchie. He ... returned to stand-up, both in cabaret and in a series of adult-rated videos. In 2007 he guest starred in two episodes of the long-running ITV police drama series The Bill, in which he played corrupt businessman Brian Stevens.
