Mike Nichols was born on November 6, 1931 in Berlin. His family moved to America when he was seven and five years later, his father died, causing incredible financial issues for his family. Nichols worked very hard in school to fulfill his dream of being accepted at the Universtiy of Chicago. However, in his college years, he quickly grew tired of academic life and small jobs. He dropped out and eventually joined a group of actors in Chicago that formed the Compass, which gave him some wonderful connections is the acting/film world, the most important being Elaine May. Elaine May had a profound affect on Nichols, inspiring him to mock the ordinary and typical, and look towards the unconventional.
Renowned for making movies that satirize conventional American mores, Mike Nichols was born November 6, 1931, in Berlin and came to the United States in 1938. Though he set out to be an actor, fate took him in another direction: In 1957, he teamed with Elaine May, and the duo toured the country with their clever nightclub routine.

Mike Nichols is in discussions to direct "Charlie Wilson's War" for Universal Pictures. Tom Hanks is attached to star and is producing with Gary Goetzman via the duo's Playtone banner. Aaron Sorkin, creator of "The West Wing," wrote a screenplay adaptation of "War" -- based on the book written by George Crile, who had been a longtime "60 Minutes" producer -- for Universal Pictures and Playtone. "War" centers on the CIA's covert operation in Afghanistan to arm the mujahideen. The covert ops were engineered by Charlie Wilson, a charismatic, wheeler-dealer, liberal Texas congressman who teamed with a rogue CIA operative. The two manipulated Congress, the CIA and a host of foreign governments in order to assist the Afghan rebels in their fight against the Soviets in the 1980s.
