The DC Beit Midrash is an open environment for serious Jewish learning. Participants come from a variety of backgrounds. Feel free to drop in or come weekly for learning, food, and community.
Midrash is a Hebrew word that refers to a method of explaining various passages of the Bible. The word "midrash" ... refers to a compilation of teachings that include exegetical or homiletical commentaries regarding passages within the Tanakh or Old Testament. Midrashic commentary is believed to have been handed down from one generation to another during ancient times through verbal communication and memorization. The writing of Midrashic literature began during the second century.

Midrash can have one of two emphases: halakah or haggada. In halaka, the emphasis is supposed to be on specific patterns of religious behaviors. In haggada, the emphasis is supposed to be theological matters, ethical teachings, etc. Essentially, haggada is everything not halaka.
From 7:00 to 7:30, before the Beit Midrash begins in earnest, people enjoy some light snacks (and sometimes even pizza) courtesy of food sponsors to the Beit Midrash. Feel welcome to introduce yourself to others and kibbitz. If you'd like to sponsor food for the DC Beit Midrash, please email food@dcbeitmidrash.org.

Midrash has recently become part of the curriculum at many universities, colleges and schools of theology and is studied outside the rabbinical seminaries. Presently, one may notice a surge in midrash studies. Additionally, many scholarly approaches to midrashic texts are in the planning stages. Midrash is a creative part of the “Oral Torah” which in Judaism complements the “Written Torah” (the Hebrew Bible). The rabbinic commentators of late antiquity and the early medieval period created a tremendous amount of midrashic literature not only in Israel but ... in the Jewish Diaspora. Traces of midrash are already found in the Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls, but midrash fully developed during the formative period of Judaism.
