built 648 days ago
Microsoft Office Live offerings range from free domain name, Web site and company e-mail accounts that are advertising-supported to more comprehensive services available on a subscription-fee basis. The offerings can be especially attractive to companies with 10 or fewer employees, which typically lack in-house technical resources or the budget to keep an IT person on staff. Microsoft Office Live Basics, Microsoft Office Live Essentials and Microsoft Office Live Collaboration are being offered free of charge to customers during the beta program. Customers interested in participating in the beta program are invited to register online at http://www.OfficeLive.com. Microsoft expects to release final public versions of all three Microsoft Office Live services in late 2006. The beta program is currently only available to U.S. businesses.

In the Microsoft Web hosting arena, Microsoft SQL Server is by far the most commonly used database server. Oracle, Sybase and DB2 each make appearances, but the majority of sites choose Microsoft technologies whenever possible. Regardless of the database software used in the site you are architecting, database services scale similarly. Microsoft Exchange Server (both versions 5.5 and 2000) offer identical scaling possibilities to those described for Microsoft SQL Server.

Microsoft has released an update to “web folders” for all OSs. It fixes a couple of problems as detailed in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;892211. In addition, the update provides SSL and unspecified “security enhancements”. Don't you love it when the enhancements are so good they are worth mentioning but not good enough to say what they are? That aside, providing SSL with web folders is a big deal as that has not been available when using XP and 2003 Server and the web client service (ie, not a web folder created with IE). The full story on Web Folders and WebDAV/FPSE is a long one but this update does help to unravel the problem by providing equivalent functionality across all platforms.

"Microsoft is already starting to push [.NET] out, [and] there's a lot of small and medium-sized businesses that are requesting those types of services in their Web sites," Kim says. "That's causing service providers to ask people like us for some tools and software to enable them to deploy and manage native Windows-based domains that are .NET enabled."
