Microsoft Office 2000: Users

With Office 2000, Microsoft has created a new kind of Access database project that uses SQL Server as the data store rather than a Microsoft Jet .mdb file. This new format, called an .adp file... uses OLE DB rather than Jet to connect to SQL Server, so it's optimized for query speed. The .adp file is a binary file that contains the connection information plus all form, report, macro, and module definitions. You can still create .mdb files for single-user or small workgroup solutions if you want, but for large-scale database projects, the .adp file format is preferable.
The Web Client Security Update for Office 2000 protects you from a vulnerability in Office 2000 that can allow login information to be sent over the Internet. Malicious Web site operators could deceive users into browsing to a Web page or server that captures login information without permission or verification of credentials from the user. This update prevents user credentials from being sent unless users grant express permission consistent with their browser settings. To use the Web Client Security Update, you must have installed Office 2000 Service Release 1a (SR-1a). You ... need to have Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 or later installed on your computer for this update to work. You can download the latest version of Internet Explorer for free from the Internet Explorer Home page on Microsoft.com.
Office 2000 includes three Office Web components—Spreadsheet, Chart, and PivotTable—which make corporate data available through a browser. Each of the Web components gives developers the opportunity to integrate powerful Office functionality into the solutions they distribute through the Web. The Spreadsheet component provides basic spreadsheet functionality in the browser, enabling users to enter text and numbers, create formulas, recalculate, sort, filter, and perform basic formatting. The Chart component provides interactivity and automatic updates as the underlying data changes. The PivotTable dynamic views component lets users browse report data, dynamically sort and filter it, group it by rows or columns, create totals, and focus on the details behind the totals.
Office Assistant, included since 1997 as a part of Microsoft Agent technology, is a system that uses animated characters to offer unrequested context-sensitive suggestions to users and access to relevant parts of the help system. The Assistant is often dubbed "Clippy" or "Clippit," due to its default to a paper clip character, coded as CLIPPIT.ACS. The Office Assistant was hidden by default in Office XP and following mixed public response, not installed by default in Office 2003. It has been removed entirely in Office 2007.
