Catherine explained that although cornrows don't work well on thin or fine hair, micro-braids can be worn by nearly everyone. Cornrows start at the very top of the scalp and gather hair on the way down, much like French braids. Micro-braids are only attached at one point on the scalp and are able to swing freely. Women with Afro-Caribbean hair can wear their braids for up to 6 weeks, while people of other ethnicities usually have to remove them sooner as the braids start to loosen and look unkempt.

Micro braids are "in" for Tameka Ferguson, a 20-year-old junior fashion design major. It's her favorite style because of the versatility. "You can do a lot with them, pull them up in a French roll, ponytail or wear it down." The braids are so thin, it looks like you have long hair, Ferguson says.

Hairstylist Clea White of Peoria, Il., can fashion box braids, French braids, micro braids, cornrows, braids with hair extensions, and braids without. "The parting, that's what makes braiding," she recently told the Peoria Journal Star. Braiding comes naturally to White, but the essence of the parting and sectioning lies in a subject that she loved in school — mathematics.

Christy Davis, 19, a sophomore marketing major, once had micro braids woven into her hair, and the process took about 25 hours. The duration of a styling session depends on the thickness of the braid extensions and the number of stylists working to complete one hairdo. But trendy doesn't have to take hours, says Davis, who now takes a few minutes every morning to fix her high-neck crop that's cut shorter in the back and angled longer in the front.
