Mick Jagger: Songs

In "Hide Away", Jagger sings about a longing to disappear, perhaps from celebrity, perhaps from his past, perhaps from this life. It has a trace of the bliss-bound sentiments of U2’s "Where the Streets Have No Name", affirming that the singer is prepared for a permanent spiritual retreat. And it’s hard not to wonder if the song isn’t the fruit of Jagger’s own meditations on death, which might not seem very far away for a middle-aged man who has lived as recklessly as he has.

Jagger-Jack Flash Jagger wanted U2's Bono for "Joy," since the song had a spiritual dimension and some of U2's work explored that area. He intercepted a U2 tour and set up recording equipment in the dining room of a dingy German country house. Bono, suffering from a throat ailment, wandered into the room in his pajamas to add a vocal.
Originally a dance-infused demo, "Charmed Life" was concocted in Jagger's home in France with guitarist Jimmy Rip during the making of 1993's Wandering Spirit. "I always liked the song, but we didn't use it," Jagger says. "And then I thought, 'OK, we'll put it out, so what are we gonna do with it?'" He remixed the track with the help of friend Ashley Beedle. "We didn't change the beats that much, but we just put new kinds of sounds on it. I've got a lot of remixes on this one." Intriguing footnote: That's Jagger's oldest daughter, Karis, on backing vocals.

While a song like "Just Another Night" retains its crackle, some of Jagger's solo material suffers from dated production. When the percussion screams "1980s" and it's not the 1980s, it's a distraction.
