The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) will recognize and celebrate successful entrepreneurial activities at the 4th Annual Investment and Commercialization Success Celebration event on September 24th at the Capitol Rotunda. MEDC is currently accepting nominations of companies that have contributed to successful technology transfer commercialization and entrepreneurial activities in the past year.

The University of Michigan observes the 75th Anniversary of the Avery Hopwood and Jule Hopwood Awards. The awards ceremony includes a reading by author Charles Baxter, a former UM faculty member. The first Hopwood awards were made in 1931, and today the Hopwood Program is proud to offer approximately $120,000 in prizes every year to young aspiring writers at the University of Michigan.

The Republican Party dominated Michigan until the Great Depression. In the 1912 election, Michigan was one of the six states to support progressive Republican and third party candidate Theodore Roosevelt for President after he lost the Republican nomination to William Howard Taft. In recent years, the state has leaned toward the Democratic Party in national elections. Michigan has supported Democrats in the last four presidential elections. In 2004, John Kerry carried the state over George W. Bush, winning Michigan's 17 electoral votes with 51.2% of the vote. Democrats have won each of the last three, and nine of the last ten, U.S. Senate elections in Michigan.

* From 2002 to 2003, auto thefts in Michigan increased 8 percent, according to ATPA. This compares with a nationwide increase of 1.2 percent. In 2003, 53,307 vehicles were reported stolen in Michigan, compared with 49,248 in 2002. Data for the 2004 calendar year is not available until February 2006.

Last year, more than 378,000 Michigan residents received $77 million in aid through the Home Heating Credit program, which is funded by the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. The Home Heating Credit can be applied to all heating costs, including propane and purchased firewood. The deadline to file is Sept. 30, 2008, but residents are encouraged to file now for the credit.

Michigan junior running back Mike Hart confirmed today he'd return for his senior year at U-M, joining Chad Henne and Jake Long, who have already announced their intentions. Hart finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy balloting after rushing for 1,515 yards and 14 touchdowns.
