Michael Ying, chairman of Esprit Holdings, knows all too well the frustrations of running a retail business in China. Ying's Hong Kong-based company, which controls the Esprit name in Asia and Europe, has opened 108 clothing stores in China over the past 4 1/2 years. But the returns so far have been less than stellar: The mainland shops still account for just 4% of sales. The vagaries of the market, Ying says, with different bureaucrats in different places issuing different diktats, make retailing a very hard nut to crack. ''Every time you go to a new province or a new city, you never know enough,'' he says. ''You're never quite sure.''

According to The Sun, retired actress Brigitte Lin (Lam Ching-Ha) and her husband Michael Ying will be spening part of the Lunar New Year in Taiwan with Lin's parents. It will be the first time Lin has gone home for the holidays in two years.

The performance must have impressed Hong Kong businessman Michael Ying, who controlled Esprit's Asia business. The Asian branch acquired the European outfit in 1997, and Ying later made Krogner global CEO. Krogner then exported his plan to Asia. Esprit has a strong presence in China, with 69 stores operated through a joint venture. Last year Esprit opened its first store in India, through a local franchisee.

Retired actress Brigitte Lin (Lam Ching-Ha) was spotted in the Kowloon Tong district yesterday with her daughter Ying Ka-Sin. The two were shopping for a birthday present for Lin's other daughter Oi-Lam. Oi-Lam turned seven yesterday (January 2nd). When approached by reporters from The Sun, Lin greeted them with a smile but did not answer their questions
