Michael Waltrip is in a world of hurt right now. He asked Toyota to send engineers to his shop for help, and Toyota has taken one of his cars to have its engineers dismantle it and go over it. NASCAR has even sent officials over to his shop to help him understand why he's having template issues.

On January 20th, 2006, Michael Waltrip and president of Jasper, Doug Bawel, announced they have formed Waltrip-Jasper Racing. Waltrip-Jasper Racing fielded the No. 55 NAPA Auto Parts Car in the 2006 Nextel Cup Series, driven by Waltrip. Bawel, as the listed owner of the No. 77 that he fielded with Roger Penske in 2005, had a guaranteed starting spot in the first five races of 2006 by virtue of finishing 34th in the 2005 owner points. This enabled Waltrip to make the first five races in 2006 without qualifying on time.[4]
During the course of his career, Michael Waltrip has driven his number 55 car with great skill. He is known, amongst other things, for his loyalty and skill in the driver’s seat. Today he spends much of his time with his family in North Caronlina where he is an ardent supporter of the Dallas Cowboys. He is still involved with a number of different aspects of racing and he ... enjoys participating in numerous marathons. Both he and his brother are often called on to appear in advertisements and he currently serves on the SPEED Channel’s NASCAR Inside Nextel Cup panel of experts. Waltrip has enjoyed four wins, 122 top tens and three pole positions.

Michael Waltrip's only chance of making the Daytona 500 is to race his way in during his Gatorade Duel 150-mile race. Since NASCAR has confiscated his primary race car he must race his way in without his crew chief and in a backup car that did not get to practice today (Wednesday). This is a tall order for any driver, made even more difficult by the intense media scrutiny that the team has been enduring this week.

It was announced during the 2005 season that BDR had entered into a partnership with Michael Waltrip and NAPA AUTO PARTS to field a second BDR car in 2006. A few months later, it was confirmed veteran Dave Blaney had returned to the organization to pilot the No. 22 car with Caterpillar's continued support.
