Michael Vick
built 88 days ago
Michael Vick is the NFL quarterback arrested in 2007 for his role in illegal dog fighting. An outstanding athlete, Vick began attracting scouts while playing high school football in Newport News, Virginia. He spent two seasons as quarterback for Virginia Tech and carried the team to the 2000 Bowl Championship Series national title game. Tech lost to Florida State, 46-29, but the game confirmed Vick's dazzling athleticism and made him a hot prospect for the pros. The Atlanta Falcons made him the first pick of the NFL draft in 2001; it was the first time an African American quarterback was the first overall pick. Vick played sparingly in 2001, but went to the Pro Bowl in 2002, 2004 and 2005.

Michael Vick is a saint and the president of the ASPCA and the Atlanta Humane Society. Everything he does is righteous and good. dogfighting? You will never find Vick in a courtroom or in jail or anything like that. He is a great man and everyone thinks that too. After high school, Michael Vick attended Virginia Tech. In his first collegiate game as a redshirt freshman against James Madison in 1999, he scored three rushing touchdowns in just over one quarter of play. His last touchdown was a spectacular flip in which he landed awkwardly on his ankle, forcing him to miss the remainder of the game in addition to the following game. During the season, Vick led a last-minute game-winning drive against West Virginia in the annual Black Diamond Trophy rivalry game. He led the Hokies to an 11-0 season and to the Bowl Championship Series national title game in the 2000 Nokia Sugar Bowl against Florida State. Although Virginia Tech lost 46-29, Vick was able to bring the team back from a 21 point deficit to take a brief lead.

He led the NCAA in passing efficiency, setting a record for a freshman (180.4), which was ... good enough for the second-highest all-time mark to Shaun King's record from the 1998 season at Tulane University.

Michael Vick and his legal team received potentially discouraging news this morning, when U.S. District Court Judge Henry E. Hudson sentenced two of Vick's co-defendants, Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips, to longer prison sentences than federal prosecutors had recommended. Peace will serve 18 months, while Phillips will serve 21 months. In exchange for the defendants' cooperation, prosecutors had recommended that each receive a sentence consistent with the lower end of the federal sentencing guidelines (12 to 18 months for Peace; 16 to 24 months for Phillips). Just as he has with Vick... Judge Hudson had the discretion to issue sentences in excess of the guidelines and to discount -- or altogether ignore -- the prosecutors' recommendation.
