Michael Richards: Audience

To the person that is trying to defend Mr. Richards, the two guys in the audience, yelled out, "you're not funny", they didn't call him a cracker first, so that is not true. Michael is the one that decided to let his true colors shine. The old saying holds true, "What's in a man will come out." Michael and Mel have these issues inside of them, pushed to the limit, their dirty little secret comes out.

Richards has a very vague sense of self-sacrifice. That’s what being a standup comedian is all about. There’s no script that the audience follows, so you are at their mercy. They say that you don’t know a person until you see them perform under pressure. Richards flaked out and is no exception.
Richards' outburst was petty and exploitative of the audience's objections to racial slurs. There's no way to prepare yourself to hear such outright racism that doesn't seem to be part of a pattern other than a comedian losing his cool and launching a counterattack that he thought would hurt his hecklers. That's the difference between having implicit racism inside of you since childhood (like Gibson) and being a bitter middle-aged washed comedian trying to hurt his hecklers (like Richards.)

[T]hat's not all -- Richards once quit the show in the middle of production, says Simon, with a full studio audience in attendance and wouldn't return until coaxed back by the president of the network. What's more, Richards once stood on his head in the middle of a shot, inexplicably, and was once found in a corner of a soundstage, weeping uncontrollably.

Former Seinfeld star Michael Richards uncorked a string of racial epithets after reportedly being heckled by two black audience members at the Laugh Factory comedy club. Members of the crowd are then seen leaving in droves while one of the targets of Richards' tirade shouts back abuse. Richards then leaves the stage before an unidentified compere offers apologies to the audience.

What good would it do anyone for Michael Richards to apologize the next night at the comedy club where he uttered the offending remark, to a completely different audience? There might not be anyone videotaping so that the rest of the country could see. Better to go on national television and let the entire country see how shaken up you are about the whole thing.
