Michael Krasny: Company

Though computer sales are limping noticeably these days, Krasny isn't leaving CDW under a dark cloud. The company's net sales for 2000 were $3.8 billion, up 50% from 1999. Though revenue growth slowed considerably in the fourth quarter, the company expects revenue this quarter to grow about 12 %. CDW will cut marketing costs this year, but does not anticipate eliminating jobs.

"Michael pioneered a new model that remains very powerful," said Steve Raymund, CEO of distributor Tech Data, which counts CDW as one of its biggest customers. "It was a new model of reselling at the time. Step by step, Michael was building a company that proved to be the dominant force in the industry today."

CDW has certainly left the kitchen--and now, Krasny's direct control. This week Krasny handed over the chief executive reigns to John Edwardson, a former president of United Airlines' parent company UAL (nyse: UAL - news - people). Edwardson, who will take over Krasny's job as chairman of the board in May... becomes company president, replacing Gregory Zeman.

[O]ne saying in the booklet, "Success means never being satisfied," led Krasny to make one of his most difficult decisions. About two years ago, he realized that someone else would have to lead CDW if it was to mature into a global company focused on selling more complex technologies and solutions. That person was Edwardson, named CDW CEO in January 2001 and chairman several months later.
