After a few small roles in films like Dead Bang (1989), Tango & Cash (1989) and Miller’s Crossing (1990), Jeter landed his first breakout role as a homeless cabaret singer in Terry Gilliam’s The Fisher King (1991). He followed up with roles as diverse as Rudy, a kindhearted mental patient in Patch Adams (1998), a death row inmate who befriends a mouse in The Green Mile (1999) and a dinosaur hunter in 2001’s Jurassic Park III.
Jeter received critical acclaim for his role as the homeless cabaret singer in The Fisher King, co-starring Robin Williams. He ... appeared in The Green Mile as condemned prisoner Eduard Delacroix, co-starring James Cromwell. In television, he was a regular on the Burt Reynolds sitcom Evening Shade, as assistant football coach Herman Stiles, for which he won an Emmy.
Accepting the role as assistant football coach Herman Stiles, Jeter's enthusiasm for acting was re-ignited as he was honored with an Emmy for the role in 1992. A busy stage actor as well, Jeter won a Tony in 1990 for his performance in {+Grand Hotel}. From 1990 on, Jeter maintained his film career with a series of memorably quirky roles.
Jeter appeared on television frequently in the 1990s, earning two more Emmy nominations for roles as a guest star on Chicago Hope and Picket Fences (both CBS). The role of an eccentric frog-breeder in the episode of Picket Fences was written especially for him.

Jeter was open about his homosexuality and troubles with drug and alcohol addiction, and for a time decided to retire from entertainment, but was eventually enticed back with roles on television and in movies. He was diagnosed to be HIV-positive in 1997.[4]
