In May 1982, during the televised 25th anniversary of Motown, Michael Jackson performed his version of the "moonwalk" dance which quickly became his signature along side his one white-sequined glove. By now, the popular music television station MTV was showing Michael Jackson's videos continuously. Previous to that time MTV was reluctant to give any televised time to black entertainers.

Even before being tried on child molesting charges, Michael Jackson was mired in a declining musical career and a thicket of financial woes. And while a conviction may have barred any chance of a comeback, entertainment executives said Monday that the not-guilty verdict still left the onetime King of Pop facing a daunting road in re-establishing his credibility as a performer.
Though Michael Jackson has been known for pretty much anything and everything under the sun besides music for the past 15 years or so, his accomplishments during the '80s will always remain some of the most impressive in music history. For better or worse, Jackson came to define what it meant to be a star in the modern world, and it can certainly never be said that his public life has ever been boring.

While showing a devout interest in music early on in his childhood -- as did the rest of his older brothers -- Michael began performing at a young age.

In 2003 Jackson was arrested on multiple counts of child molestation, giving alcohol to a minor, extortion, and false imprisonment. The boy who accused Jackson of molestation testified during the trial, as did his mother, and testimony about alleged previous incidents of molestation by Jackson was ... presented. Jackson’s defense attorneys countered by casting doubt on the credibility of the accuser and his family. After a long, heavily publicized trial, a jury acquitted Jackson of all charges in June 2005.
