Miami is an international city, unlike any other in the United States. It is known as Southeast Florida’s “Magic City,” and is located on the Miami River, between the Florida Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean. Miami is the state’s largest city and the county seat for Miami-Dade County (which is the most populated county in Florida.) Half of the two million people who live in the Miami area are Hispanic and Spanish is the predominant language. Warm, balmy temperatures, giant Banyan trees and palms swaying in the breeze along with an eclectic blend of art, music, food and entertainment makes Miami one of the most exciting cities in the country. It’s hard to believe that just over a century ago, it was nothing more than a swampy outpost of mosquito infested settlements. In 1896, with a population of only 300, the city officially incorporated and things changed with the arrival of the railroad.

Miami skyline This image has been recommended for deletion. Miami has the largest Latin American population outside of Latin America itself with nearly 65% of its populace either from Latin America or of Latin American ancestry. Spanish is a language often used for day-to-day discourse in many places, although English is the language of preference, especially when dealing with businesses and government. You will find that almost all locals speak English to a comfortable if not fluent level. Despite this, it is not at all uncommon to encounter a local who does not speak English at all, though this is usually centered amongst shops and restaurants in residential communities and not generally the case in large tourist areas or the downtown district. Even when encountering a local who does not speak English, you can easily find another local to help with translation if needed without much effort, since most of the population is fluently bilingual. In certain neighborhoods, such as Little Havana and Hialeah, most locals will address a person first in Spanish, then in English, rather than the other way around.

Miami © Digishooter - FOTOLIA If you want to get out of the sun and take in some culture, Miami has some great museums, such as the Museum of Science and Space Transit, the Seaquarium, and the Miami-Dade Cultural Center. Another attraction is a Spanish Monastery that dates back to 1133 and was taken from Segovia, Spain. It is currently the oldest building in the country. And if you enjoy old buildings... be sure to visit the Vizcaya Villa, a winter mansion for James Deering built in 1916. If you're here on business, some of the places that you may be visiting are the American Express, DHL, and Ryder headquarters.
Team of the 80's from January 7, 1990 edition of the Miami Herald After surviving the scare from Boston College, Miami demolished #14 Syracuse, 59-0, and #12 Washington, 65-7, in consecutive weeks. The combined 124-7 score was a record for the largest margin of victory over consecutive ranked opponents. The final hurdle to the Rose Bowl BCS National Championship Game was at Virginia Tech. Miami jumped on the Hokies, leading 20-3 at halftime. Virginia Tech added a couple of late touchdowns, attempting two-point conversions on each. The first conversion was successful, pulling them to 26-18, but receiver Ernest Wilford dropped a pass from quarterback Grant Noel in the endzone for the second conversion.
MIAMI, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Vacationers who light up on Carnival Cruise Lines' new smoke-free ship, the MS Paradise, which set sail from Miami yesterday on its inaugural Caribbean cruise, may find it's the most expensive cigarette they've ever smoked. Not only will it result in a premature end to their vacation, but ... in a payment of $250 in "liquidated damages" -- for each infraction. "We made it clear eighteen months ago that Paradise would be completely smoke-free and we intend to be very stringent in enforcing that policy," said Carnival President Bob Dickinson. He added that there are 12 other ships in the Carnival fleet on which smoking is allowed. Guests who violate the no-smoking policy will be required to disembark at the next port of call and return home at their own expense. They will not be entitled to any refund of their cruise fare.
