The Miami Heat were an expansion team, along with the Charlotte Hornets, and began playing in the 1989-90 season. Ron Rothstein was the Heats first head coach and they made Ron Seikaly from Syracuse University their first draft pick. The Miami Heat played their home games at the Miami Arena from 1988 through 1999. The Heat finished their inaugural season in 1989 in last place with a league low 15 wins. The Heat gradually improved over the next few seasons and made their first playoff appearance in 1992 with Kevin Loughery as their head coach and stars like Glenn Rice, Rony Seikaly and Grant Long.. Loughery led the Heat to the playoffs again in 1994 with a similar cast of players that included Steve Smith.

The Miami Heat (known as the HEAT [in all capital letters] on official team publications) is a professional basketball team based in Miami, Florida, United States. They play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Two years after winning their first NBA championship, they currently own the worst record in the league, with a 9-41 record after the first half of the 2007-08 season.
The Miami Heat came into the NBA in 1988 as an expansion team, and slowly but surely have become a competitor for the NBA Championship. In 1995 The Heat brought in Pat Riley--former star coach of The LA Lakers- and hoped he could lead them to an NBA Finals, only to lose to Michael Jordan and the Bulls once again. Over the years the Heat have had some great players, from Glenn Rice to Tim Hardaway, but they were never able to put the pieces together to reach the NBA Finals. Now that the Miami Heat picked up Shaquille Oneal, and Dwayne Wade is starting to play like one of the top 10 players in the league, they have a good shot at winning the NBA Title in 2005. The Heat won the first two games of the series at home, despite Udonis Haslem being ejected in the first game and suspended in the second for throwing his mouthpiece in the area of the referee. The team lost games three and four in Chicago, but bounced back to win game five at home. After winning game six in Chicago, the Heat eliminated the Bulls from the playoffs and went on to face the New Jersey Nets in the second round. The Heat lost Game 1 at home, 100-88, but then swept the Nets out of the playoffs for the second year in a row taking Game 5 at home 106–105.
