Official seal of City of Miami Beach The Miami Beach environs are home to a number of Orthodox Jewish communities with a network of well-established synagogues and yeshivas. It is ... a magnet for Jewish families, retirees, and particularly snowbirds when the cold winter sets in to the north. They range from the Followers to the Modern Orthodox to the Haredi and Hasidic - including many rebbes who vacation there during the North American winter. There are a number of kosher restaurants and even kollels for post-graduate Talmudic scholars. Miami Beach had roughly 60,000 people in Jewish households, 62 percent of the total population, in 1982, but only 16,500, or 19 percent of the population, in 2004, said Ira Sheskin, a demographer at the University of Miami who conducts surveys once a decade.
The southern end of the the 10-mile-long barrier island of Miami Beach is home to the Art Deco National Historic District, the only location in the United States to be so designated. It is comprised of a few dozen hotels and apartment buildings built primarily in the 1930's. These buildings are soaring examples of pre-war modernism with charactertic rounded corners and geometric ornamentation. The highlight of the district is the strip of hotels along Ocean Drive between 5th and 15th street.

With scenic waterfront surroundings and proximity to nearly every city convenience imaginable, North Miami Beach offers an enviable lifestyle. Located on the outskirts of dynamic Miami, this city is refreshingly close-knit. The popularity of community groups and activities enhances the sense of identity among the city’s 43,000 residents and 13 neighborhoods. Other advantages include plentiful recreational opportunities, generally mild weather and a range of residential property options. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department manages several facilities and many programs to suit almost any interest or hobby. With five community centers, three pool facilities, a performing arts theater and many athletic fields, there is almost always something to do.
When doors open to Ricky Martin's 3-night stand, Miami Beach music fans will notice a difference. Upon entering the venue, there will be fresh apples for hungry live music aficionados and a greeter to let them know about upcoming shows. Five new sparkling chandeliers will shine light on red walls which will be hung with posters, pictures and newspaper articles reflecting the local history of the Jackie Gleason Theater as well as that of the original Fillmore San Francisco. Fans will ... notice that the floor of the main music hall is terraced with hardwood floors to allow for both seated and standing configurations and the carpet has been removed from the lobby to make room for rich ceramic tile flooring. After the show, a collectible poster commemorating the evening will be distributed to concert goers, a tradition that will continue for select shows throughout the year.
Miami Beach is governed by a Mayor and 6 Commissioners. The mayor runs commission meetings and the mayor and all commissioners have equal voting power. The Mayor serves for terms of 2 years with a term limit of 4 terms and commissioners serve for terms of 4 years and are limited to 2 terms. Commissioners are not voted for by region and every two years 3 commission seats are voted upon.
