Mia Hamm is a great soccer player. She has scored more goals than any other female soccer player in the world. Mia is a forward for the Washington Freedom and the US National Team. She was born on March 17, 1972 in Selma, Alabama and grew up mostly in Texas. She is the fourth of six children. Mia moved many times when she was young because her father was in the Air Force.

Hamm has been able to gain the respect of soccer experts and build a large fan base in the United States, where she played for seventeen years as a member of the United States women's national soccer team. She is widely considered to be one of the best women to have ever played the game, having been named FIFA World Player of the Year twice (2001 and 2002), although she was recently surpassed by German Birgit Prinz, who won in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

In 1987, when she was just 15, Mia Hamm became the youngest ever member of the US national team. At the age of 17, she scored her first ever goal for the United States in a game against Canada. After high school, she went to play soccer at the University of North Carolina, where she led the Tar Heels to four straight national titles and finished as the team's all-time leading scorer. In 1991, Mia Hamm helped the United States win the first ever Women's World Cup of Soccer.
