Built to compete with Universal Studios, Disney/MGM is a wondrous place where the movies come to life. MGM opened in May of 1989 to lots of fanfare and has never looked back. The park was so immediately popular that backstage areas had to be opened to handle the overflow of the crowds. Attractions were then built into these areas and the park's expansion was underway.

Disney-MGM Studios is divided into several distinct areas, each representing a portion of Hollywood or filmmaking. These areas are: Hollywood Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard, Echo Lake, the Animation Courtyard, Mickey Avenue, and the Streets of America/Commissary Lane.

You enter Disney-MGM Studios along Hollywood Boulevard, a Disneyesque version of Hollywood’s main drag of the 1920s and 30s. This palm-lined street is dotted with Art Deco Disney shops, services, and restaurants. Disney characters and street performers are frequently found along this avenue. Just off of Hollywood Boulevard is Sunset Boulevard, a recreation of that famous street in its heyday, the 1940s. Sunset Boulevard offers another venue for shopping, dining, and street entertainment.

The Disney-MGM Studios typically opens at 9:00 am. The closing time varies from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The later closing times occur near the winter holidays, the Easter holiday, and during the summer, generally from late June through late August.

There are ... spectacles of lights, and a spectacular 25-minute show of lasers, lights, dancing fountains and dazzling special effects. Another option is to take The Great Movie Ride, a ride through Disney all-time classic films. Or to see Beauty and the Beast-Live on Stage, a Broadway-style musical about the modern classic Belle and the Beast.
