Mexico City: Downtown Mexico City
built 627 days ago
Downtown Mexico City has been an urban area since the precolumbian 12th century, and the city is filled with historical buildings and landmarks from every epoch since then. It is ... known as the City of Palaces, because of the large number of stately buildings, especially in the Centro. In addition, Mexico is the city with the largest number of museums in the world without taking into account Art Galleries, being New York #2, London #3 and Toronto #4.

"The discussion and voting on the [abortion-reform proposal] were marked by prayers, vigils, music and protests around the Legislative Assembly building" in downtown Mexico City. "During the course of the debate, a motion put forth by legislators from the National Action Party was rejected...." With it, the PAN politicians, who represent the party of Mexican President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, sought to send the proposed legal reform to legislative committees for a decision instead of allowing it to be voted on by the assembly. The homes of Frida Kahlo and Leon Trotsky, now museums, are in Coyoacan, south of downtown Mexico City. Stop for pre-Hispanic art at Anahuacalli, a museum designed by Diego Rivera before heading out to Parque Nacional Desierto de los Leones for fresh air. This national park is high enough to escape some of the smog and a good place to put all this history and culture in perspective.
