Landforms The Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre Oriental mountain ranges border Mexico's elevated high desert, or Central Plateau ([A]ltiplano); the southern reaches of that plateau are crisscrossed by numerous valleys. Several smaller mountain ranges divide the landscape of southern Mexico, with the Sierra Madre del Sur the most significant.

A strong earthquake shook southern Mexico on Tuesday, causing panic and minor damage to buildings, and prompting an oil refinery to shut down as a precaution. There were no reports of major damage or injuries.

The Air Force national headquarters is embedded in the Army headquarters in Mexico City. It ... follows the continental staff system, with the usual A1, A2, A3, and A4 sections. The tactical forces form what is loosely called an Air Division, but it is dispersed in four regions—Northeast, Northwest, Central, and Southern. The Air Force maintains a total of 18 air bases, and has the additional capability of opening temporary forward operating bases in austere conditions for some of the rotary wing and light fixed-wing assets.
