Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. Almost a century later in 1910, a social revolution began. People struggled for economic progress and social justice. Huge, privately owned estates were seized by the government and divided among millions of landless farmers. A national school system was established; hospitals and housing projects were built. In the 1940's, government backed the development of manufacturing and industry and petroleum production.

I[T] would be difficult to name an activity that you like to do, that you can't do in Mexico. In the larger cities, you can attend events such as the opera, symphony, bull fights, horse racing, dog racing, professional sports, etc. Smaller centers have folk festivals, stage plays, fiestas, flea markets, street musicians, etc. Most places have movie theaters, golf courses, and wonderful plazas where people gather in the evenings.

On Tuesday, May 29, over 150 people, mainly workers and trade unionists filled a hall in the Workers' University of Mexico to hear Alan Woods speaking on Venezuela and the Latin American revolution. The ideas he outlined connected immediately with the mood of Mexican workers and youth after the tumultuous events of last year when millions mobilise against electoral fraud.

A moderate earthquake rocked Baja California in Mexico, shutting down factories near the U.S. border and leaving about 400,000 people without power, authorities said Saturday. No major damage or injuries were immediately reported.
