Mexico: Cities
built 630 days ago
Mexico is so notorious for traveler's diarrhea that it is often called "Montezuma's Revenge" (Venganza de Moctezuma). The reason for this is not so much the spicy food but the contamination of the water supply in some of the poorer zones in Mexico. In most of the small towns that are less industrialized, only the poorest Mexicans will drink tap water. The best policy is to only drink bottled or purified water, both of which are readily available. Just like in the USA, in most major Mexican cities the water is purified at the cities' water company. In most restaurants in these poor zones, the only water served comes from large jugs of purified water.

In the south the deserts yield to the broad, shallow lakes of a region, comprising the Valley of Mexico, known as the Anáhuac and famous for its rich cultural heritage. South of the Anáhuac, which includes Mexico City, is a chain of extinct volcanoes, including Citlaltépetl, or Orizaba (18,700 ft/5,700 m, the highest point in Mexico), Popocatépetl, and Iztaccihuatl. To the south are jumbled masses of mountains and the Sierra Madre del Sur.
Half a million street vendors fill the squares of Mexico City to make their living. The mayor wants to wipe out the vendors, whose businesses contribute no taxes to the city. But the vendors have their own organization that opposes the city's plans.

Although the highway system is generally not up to American and Canadian standards, many excellent highways can be found in Mexico, and many other roads only require a little patience to take you to marvelous sights. Volcanoes, vast deserts, tropical jungles, miles of deserted beaches, ancient ruins, modern cities, quaint villages, and posh resorts, can all be found in Mexico.

A massive National Democratic Convention (CND) met in the centre of Mexico City on Saturday, September 16 and decided to elect “a legitimate government” with Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador as its president. It is clear that this is not simply a "normal" movement against electoral fraud but a movement that challenges bourgeois democracy itself and the institutions of capitalism.
