Mexican immigration occupies a complex position in the U.S. legal system and in U.S. public opinion. Immigration law has swung back and forth throughout the 20th century, at times welcoming Mexican immigrants and at other times slamming the door shut on them. The public reception of this immigrant group has ... been unpredictable; Mexican immigrants have been able to make a place for themselves in communities across the United States, but frequently have had to battle hostile elements in those same communities to survive. In many ways, this push-and-pull dynamic continues today.

The Mexican society has risen to topple tyrannical regimes before, but ever since has been in a state of slumber, patiently bearing unnecessary burdens placed upon the Mexican people by the politicians. To help cope with the stress inherent to such a task, Mexicans employ a variety of things:

In the 2000 U.S. census 21.5 million people identified themselves as Mexican Americans. An additional 2 to 3 million illegal immigrants from Mexico are estimated to live in the United States. Mexican Americans constitute the largest group of Hispanic Americans. About 90 percent of the Mexican American population today can be traced to emigration from impoverished rural regions of northern Mexico during the 20th century. The rest trace their roots to 17th- and 18th-century colonists who settled in Mexican territories that are now part of the southwestern United States, including California, Texas, and parts of New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona. Mexican Americans still live primarily in these southwestern states.

Mexican food varies by region, because of local climate and geography and ethnic differences among the indigenous inhabitants and because these different populations were influenced by the Spaniards in varying degrees. The north of Mexico is known for its beef production and meat dishes. Southeastern Mexico, on the other hand, is known for its spicy vegetable and chicken-based dishes. Seafood is commonly prepared in the states that border the Pacific Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico.

Madero came from a wealthy family in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila. He achieved national recognition with the publication in early 1909 of his book, La successíon presidencial en 1910 (The Presidential Succession in 1910). In the work Madero called for free elections and a ban on reelection to high public offices. He ... argued that Díaz should permit a free selection of the vice president who would presumably succeed the aging president. When it became evident that Díaz would not permit any choice, Madero chose to run for the presidency himself. Díaz initially welcomed Madero’s candidacy as a harmless threat that would give the election a democratic appearance.

Congress is moving to shut down the pilot program, but legislation may not be enacted quickly enough with the unsafe long-haul Mexican trucks prepared to start crossing into the United States within days. Under a 2001 NAFTA order, the Bush administration is authorizing up to 100 Mexico-based trucking companies to operate beyond the narrow border zone.
