Metis was the daughter of Titan Ocean and the mother of goddess Athina, the goddess of wisdom. When Metis got pregnant from Zeus, Gaea told him that after his daughter was born, Metis would get pregnant again, with a son this time, who would rule the world. To avoid this, Zeus swallowed pregnant Metis, just like Cronus had done when he swallowed up his own children in order to block succession. Metis gave birth to her daughter inside Zeus' head! Athina was born from Zeus' head, after Hephaestus split it open with an axe. The word Metis is ... used to indicate intelligence and ability, ingenious and complex thought, sharpness of mind, inventiveness, alertness and multiple dexterities.

A most distinctive element of Metis dress was the sash. The first sashes originated in the Quebec village of L’Assumption. From this location, they became popular trade goods in both Quebec and among the Metis in the West. From this origination, the Metis began their own sash creations in the Red River area. As the Metis migrated west and south from Manitoba, they transported the Metis sash with them as a distinctive symbol of their culture.

By the mid 19th century, Metis villages had appeared in and around fur trade posts from the Great Lakes to the Mackenzie Delta. Then, as now, Metis communities shared a common outlook shaped by their historical circumstances. As provisioners to the North West Company, the Metis of the prairies organized the commercial buffalo hunt. They left their permanent settlements periodically, electing a provisional government for each expedition to make and enforce the law of the hunt. This activity increased the political consciousness of the Metis and was further heightened by the rivalry between the fur trade companies. In 1811, the Hudson's Bay company made a land grant to Lord Selkirk of 116,000 square miles of land in the Red River Valley (southern Manitoba) for an agricultural settlement and source of provisions for the fur trade.

During the 1920s and 1930s, the Metis rediscovered the voice of protest. They were led by activists such as Joseph Dion, Malcolm Norris, and James Brady. In Alberta, Metis who did not have clear title to their land began to fear that the government would give it to other settlers. In 1932 they formed the first Métis organization in Canada, the Métis Association of Alberta, to promote their cause.

This image of Metis was taken by Galileo's solid state imaging system between November 1996 and June 1997. Although Metis was discovered by Voyager, it was no more than a point of light on images. This Galileo image is the the first image of the small moon that shows its irregular shape. Metis orbits Jupiter in the zone between the planet's ring and the larger Galilean satellites. Metis is ... intended for implementing applications that allow small numbers of users to simultaneously interact in real-time with a computationally intensive simulation. This is achieved using a client-server architecture in which multiple users, each interacting via a local viewer client, may connect remotely to a single simulation server. This also has the advantage of allowing the simulation portion of the application to be run on a separate machine, which may be better suited for computation, than the viewing portion, which may be better suited for interactive 3D graphics. This type of architecture is well-suited for implementing time-critical rendering and computation, and constant-time rendering capabilities are expected to be added to future versions of Metis.
