Metis: Metis Nation
built 201 days ago
The origin of the Metis Nation is rooted in the historical fabric of Canada. It was in the Canadian Northwest that they evolved into a new and distinct Aboriginal Nation. The mixed-blood offspring of French fur traders from the North West Company or Scottish and English fur traders from the Hudson's Bay Company and Cree, Ojibway or Saulteaux women formed an ever-increasing proportion of the fur trade population. This cultural evolution commenced in the mid 1600's and reached its height in the late 1800's. With their mixed traditions and command of both European and Indian languages, the Metis were logical intermediaries in the commercial relationship between two civilizations. They adapted European technology to the wilderness, through innovations such as the Red River Cart and York Boat, making it possible to transport large volumes of goods and supplies to and from the far flung outposts of the fur trade.
The Metis Nation of Ontario has recently received funding for consultations with MNO citizens on a number of matters. In order to maximize the potential for MNO citizens to provide their input, I am pleased to inform you that the MNO will be holding a series of weekend workshops in various areas throughout the Province in the months of January, February and March, 2005.
Many Metis people in Saskatchewan's Northwest speak Michif and think they are speaking Cree. This is an Metis Nation of Saskatchewan database. Itwill provide a good resource base of Michif speaking Metis so make sure you register your name. Just click on the blinking underlined words.
The flag was first used by Metis resistance fighters prior to the Battle of Seven Oaks in 1816. It is the oldest Canadian patriotic flag indigenous to Canada. The Union Jack and the Royal Standard of New France bearing the fleur-de-lis are older, but these flags were first flown in Europe. As a symbol of nationhood, the Metis flag predates Canada’s Maple Leaf flag by about 150 years! The flag bears a horizontal figure eight, or infinity symbol. The infinity symbol represents the coming together of two distinct and vibrant cultures, those of European and indigenous North America, to produce a distinctly new culture, the Metis.
