The Metis' struggle for recognition and protection of their rights is the history of Canada. Every phase of Canadian history touched upon the Metis and in turn the Metis left their mark on most major historical events:

[One] group of Metis emerged in western Canada. They were the sons and daughters of the fur traders and their Native wives. Most were French and Catholic, though many had English-speaking Protestant fathers. The HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY (HBC) frowned on marriages with native women, but the NORTH WEST COMPANY encouraged these unions. The Metis soon formed their own culture, combining both European and native elements.

Metis as a cultural issue did not surface in Canada until the 17th century. The Roman Catholic Jesuit Order is the first to introduce this cultural cast system into Canada based on the color of one's skin, their religion and/or value system. Their classification is White French, Black Slaves, Savage Indian, Protestant English, and those Coureurs des Bois or Metis who are at the low end of the scale. It is noteworthy that the Jesuit classified the Protestant English as lesser than black or Indians. They ... had another value scale of Catholic, Pagan and Protestant being the worst evil. This implied that if you are a Protestant and English then you are grouped into the same class as the Coureurs des Bois regardless of your skin color.
