During the 19th century and early 20th century, folklore collectors went to Ingria in search of Kalevala meter poetry and other Finnish antiquities. Later published in nine volumes of The Old Poems of the Finnish People (SKVR), this material makes up nearly one quarter of the entire series. As their imaginations were only captivated by traditions they deemed old, the folklore collectors tended to overlook those they considered new. Furthermore, if they detected a Russian influence, they discarded the given tradition as false and inauthentic. Epitomized here in ethnologist Samuli Paulaharju's well-known "Pictures from here and there across Greater Finland", Ingria, with its abundance of songs, was then viewed as the "true" and "holy" Finnish periphery:

In French poetry, meter is determined solely by the number of syllables in a line. A silent 'e' counts as a syllable before a consonant, but is elided before a vowel (where "h aspiré" counts as a consonant). At the end of a line, the "e" remains unelided but is hypermetrical (outside the count of syllables, like a feminine ending in English verse). The most frequently encountered meter in French is the alexandrine, composed of two hemistiches of six syllables each. Classical French poetry ... had a complex set of rules for rhymes that goes beyond how words merely sound. These are usually taken into account when describing the meter of a poem.

Good, consistent meter in rhyme-and-meter poetry is an indication of a talented and experienced poet. When you are just getting started, don't worry too much about meter. As you write more and more poetry, you will find that you begin to recognize meter.
