In 2000 Metallica led a battle over the rights of recording artists against Napster, a popular music file-sharing Web site where fans could download music (including Metallica’s) for free. Metallica not only responded with copyright infringement suits against Napster but demanded that the estimated 335,000 Napster users who had ever downloaded a Metallica track be permanently barred from the service. To critics it was a confounding strategy that inevitably targeted some of the band’s most rabid followers. Despite a fan backlash, the controversy failed to derail that year’s successful stadium tour with Korn and Kid Rock. In January 2001 Newsted left Metallica on good terms; the band has vowed to carry on a with a replacement.

In 2006, Metallica announced on its official website that after 15 years, long-time producer Bob Rock was stepping down and would not be producing Metallica's next studio album. Metallica chose to work with producer Rick Rubin, who has produced albums for bands including Danzig, Slayer, System of a Down, and Slipknot.[60] Metallica debuted an untitled song named "The New Song" on June 6,[61] and another song nicknamed "The Other New Song" on August 12.[62] However, in a June 2007 interview with Greece's Rock Hard Magazine, Trujillo said that the songs "won't make it [on the album], at least not in that form."[63]

Predictably, many Napster users have found ways to lash out at both Metallica, and at Napster for the ban. Some disgruntled users have created websites designed to mock Metallica, and their legal maneuverings. The Paylars.com site has launched a sarcastic initiative to collect donations for Metallica, to re-imburse the band for monies they claim to have lost via napster mp3 trading. As of 05/15, the site has raised $345 for Metallica.
