In 1989, Metallica received its first Grammy Award nomination for ...And Justice for All, in the new Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrument category. Metallica was the favorite to win; ... the award was given to Jethro Tull for the album Crest of a Knave.[26] The result generated controversy among fans and the press, as Metallica was standing off-stage waiting to receive the award after performing the song "One". Jethro Tull had been advised by their manager not to attend the ceremony as he was expecting Metallica to win.[26] The award was named in Entertainment Weekly's "Grammy's 10 Biggest Upsets".[27] Three years later, Ulrich referred to the award when accepting a Grammy for "Enter Sandman" stating "We gotta thank Jethro Tull for not putting out an album this year."[28]
Metallica .And Justice For All CD James Hetfield vocals, guitar; Kirk Hammett guitar; Jason Newsted bass; Lars Ulrich drums. Following the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton, regrouped with Flotsam & Jetsam bassist Jason Newsted to record this ambitious double . JUSTICE ... marked a turning point for drummer Lars Ulrich, who began replacing his off-kilter playing with a more straightforward groove approach, and for the band, who made their first video for "One" and thus scored their first hit. Everything came together on 1986's MASTER OF PUPPETS, and JUSTICE picks up where PUPPETS left off.

Hetfield and Lars Ulrich came from different worlds to form Metallica in the L.A. suburbs in 1981. Hetfield, whose father was owner of a trucking company and mother a light-opera singer, was raised in a strict Christian Science home; Ulrich, a recently transplanted Dane, had intended to become a professional tennis player like his father, Torben Ulrich. What the two teenagers shared was an interest in the gritty music of U.K. hard rockers Motörhead. Adding guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney, the band started writing songs and recording demo tapes. Metallica’s lineup solidified after Clifford Lee Burton replaced McGovney in 1982, and the Bay Area guitarist Kirk Hammett replaced Mustaine the following year.
According to the report, Napster's monthly growth pattern has been consistently strong with the exception of July, when Metallica's drummer, Lars Ulrich, came up with a list of 300,000 Napster users, and the RIAA filed a lawsuit against the fledgling company. Aside from this hiccup, Napster is on pace to compete with other freely downloaded applications such as WinAmp, WinZip, RealPlayer and Adobe Acrobat.

In 1981 drummer Lars Ulrich and guitar player/singer James Hetfield, bass player Ron McGoveny and guitarist Dave Mustaine formed a band they called Metallica. They eventually recorded a demo that was circulated in the underground metal community. People caught wind and the band started gaining some attention, especially in San Francisco and New York. Soon Cliff Burton replaced Ron McGoveny on bass and Metallica began work on their first release.
When Ulrich became desperate to find a full-time lead guitarist for Metallica, he posted another ad in a local California newspaper. Dave Mustaine responded and agreed to audition. However, Hetfield and Ulrich were so impressed with Mustaine's warm-up, they asked him to join the band.
