More confusion followed when Metallica headlined the alternative rock-themed Lollapalooza Tour in 1996. That year, the band ... made a surprise stop at the Whisky-a-Go-Go in Hollywood for the 50th birthday party of Lemmy of Motörhead, appearing at the club all dressed like the metal veteran and performing a full set of Motörhead songs. In 1997 Metallica finished songs left over from the Load sessions for the heavier ReLoad (#1), which included vocals by Marianne Faithfull on “The Memory Remains” (#28). The album also contained “The Unforgiven II” (#59). The next year, Metallica combined the original Garage Days Revisited EP with 11 new covers and various B sides for the two-disc set Garage Inc. (#2). A live collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony (arranged and conducted by Michael Kamen) was recorded for 1999’s S&M.
When Metallica entered the mainstream in 1991, they sold over 10 million albums in U.S. alone. It was in 1996 that Metallica switched to alternative rock for their "Load" album. Unfortunately, many fans were discouraged of the sudden change in music style.
Metallica released their first major album Kill 'em All in 1983 and toured behind that album throughout the year. 1984 brought a second album Ride the Lightning and with it, a little more maturity and a solid foundation for the band to build upon.
[I]n November 1997, Metallica released "ReLoad", a new studio album filled with tracks recorded during the original "Load" sessions, which was supposed to be a double-CD. Reactions to it have been generally positive, as the songs have definitely become more elaborate again.
Metallica recorded its second studio album, Ride the Lightning, at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark. Released in August 1984, the album peaked at number 100 on the Billboard 200.[12] A European printing press mistakenly printed green covers for the album, which are now considered collectors' items. Other songs on the album include "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Creeping Death", and the instrumental "The Call of Ktulu". Mustaine was credited for "Ride the Lightning" and "The Call of Ktulu".[14]
metallica41.jpg Metallica has seen an historic rise in sales in Finland, with 10 of their past albums all charting in the Top 40 in the country. This follows hot on the heels of the band announcing they will play a show in Finland in July at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.
