Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a tragic disease that affects between 2,000 and 3,000 new people each year in the United States. If you or a loved one are a victim of mesothelioma, you are likely facing many emotions as you make important treatment and care decisions. Often, the survival time may be only one year. This is because by the time mesothelioma presents symptoms in the patient, it is very advanced. In cases where detection of mesothelioma is early, roughly half of victims will survive two years, and 20% will survive five years. The median survival is about 17 months from the beginning of symptoms.

Mesothelioma is a fatal condition characterized by a malignant tumor located in the sack or "pleura" that surrounds the lungs. Inhaling asbestos fibers is the most common cause of mesothelioma. The prognosis for mesothelioma victims is grim as conventional treatments such as chemotherapy are often unsuccessful. Often mesothelioma takes decades to develop and can occur forty years or more after exposure to asbestos fibers.

Many Mesothelioma attorneys have asbestos cases based on the contamination of vermiculite, a hydrous silicate mineral, shipped by WR Grace to about 240 plants across the country. Federal authorities in 22 states are investigating 28 plants stretching across from North Dakota to Florida and Massachusetts to California, including one plant in Hawaii.

Mesothelioma is still fairly rare. There are about 2,000 to 3,000 new cases per year in the United States. Most of the people who are diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma are over fifty years old and is seen more often with people in their seventies, since they were exposed to asbestos in the 1940s-50s or earlier. Those who were exposed to asbestos in the 1960s-70s may be diagnosed in years to come. The disease attacks men 3 to 5 times more than women. Men are more likely then women to get this disease because men held more construction positions than women in past decades (before the women's rights movement had taken place).

Mesothelioma is fairly rare. There are an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma each year in the United States. The incidence of mesotheliomas in the United States increased from 1970 to 1990 and then stabilized. It may now be decreasing. Most of the past increase in cases, as well as the recent decrease in cases, has been in men. The rate, although lower, has been fairly steady for women.

In the United States, the first asbestos caused Mesothelioma lawsuit was filed in 1966. This took place in Beaumont, Texas. This case was lost... immediately after, a co-worker of the man to file the first lawsuit filed one as well. He won and was awarded $80,000.00. During the years which followed this lawsuit, many others were filed by victims suffering from asbestos related Mesothelioma. In fact, it came to light that in most places infested with asbestos, the senior managers knew all about the link between asbestos and Mesothelioma, but hid it from the employees purposely.
