The Merrimack Valley Region is an area of south-central New Hampshire, approximately 35 miles wide, centered on the Merrimack River, and running from Canterbury south to the Massachusetts border. Henniker marks the western extent, and Nottingham the east. It includes portions of Hillsborough, Rockingham and Merrimack counties, as well as the state capital of Concord, and the state's largest city: Manchester. Reporter Drake Lucas compiled statistics from five Merrimack Valley communities that show property taxes spiraling upward. The increase in the average property tax bill over the last five years ranges from 44 percent in Lawrence to 24 percent in Haverhill. In Andover, the increase in the average bill over the last five years has been 34 percent. In North Andover, it was 28 percent and in Methuen, 26 percent.
