[O]ff, Mermaids are horrible topics to write World Literature Paper 1 on. Also there is a new form of mermaid called ditch mermaids, they live in ditches. Mermaids were first discovered by Thom Yorke, the famous sailor, in 1985. He was sailing around the Cape of Good Hope, and saw what appeared to be "a wommyyn, of about a score of ayge, of most pleasing apeerynce with the tayl of a fysshe". Upon demanding a closer look, he sailed his ship, Sharon, nearer to the mermaid. On closer inspection, the mermaid was invisible, and had been for some time. Due to his lack of evidence, it has been alledged that Yorke was a "tosser" and a "charlatan".

Mermaids are a marine race appearing in the original Final Fantasy. They have humanoid upper bodies, but have fishlike lower bodies. They inhabit the Sunken Shrine near Onrac. When the Warriors of Light arrive, the Mermaids ask them to destroy Kraken for them. The heroes succeed, and the Mermaids' existence is no longer threatened.

Mermaids are said to have fairy-like powers, with the ability to grant wishes; some fisherman have believed that spotting a mermaid is a bad omen, yet spotting them has saved their lives by making them steer clear of their intended paths. It could easily be argued, and well believed, that if something can exist with such prominence in the human psyche, the chances are that it is real; mermaids either exist here on Earth and appear when they wish, or live in some other dimension or plain of existence that our collective consciousness remembers.
