Mermaids: Seas
built 192 days ago
Mermaids are beautiful creatures of the sea. They have a woman's head and body with the tail of a fish. Mermaid coloring pages often show long flowing hair, beautiful faces and occasionally enchanting voices. These mermaids are shown two ways in stories. Sometimes they are good and romantic creatures, helping others at sea and frolicking in the water. In other stories, they are a bit trickier and like to lure unsuspecting sailors into the water or be a little bit mean to those sailing on their seas.
Mermaids are a species of nymph kind of half-fish, half woman. They are commonly seen in the sea or, more and more frequently, in fresh water lakes. They are often blamed by inept sailors when they run their boats into rocks.
Mermaids exist in the twilight place between land and sea, in the psychological intertidal zone between life-giver and life-taker. Wanton, seductive and alluring, these amphibious goddesses of classical myth toy unabashedly with a man?s affections, offering him sweetness yet bringing only death. The paintings of the pre-Raphaelites portray mermaids as lovely maidens with a silvery aquatic tail, who comb their luxurious tresses in serene repose along a placid shore, but the mermaids of old were neither so innocent nor demure. With the sultry curve of their breasts and the dulcet darkness of their dreamy eyes, those half-forgotten ocean deities promised to reveal the secrets of the unattainable fathoms, only to drown men with their savage affection.
Mermaids love music, art, stories and laughter. It is said that the waters around Newfoundland are particularly rich with Mermaids because for centuries they have been drawn to the lively strains of fiddles and flutes, the storytelling, the laughter and the dance that as anyone knows, fills any ship sailing for Newfoundland. Her name is Jazz Maid and her colourful energy reflects the vibrant music, theatre, visual and literary arts scene for which St. John's is so renowned. The next time you're on a ship, sing a little tune to the sea and you just might hear an enchanting voice humming alongside you.
The Mermaid’s House offers amazing views of the abundant birdlife that inhabit Tomales Bay and it is not uncommon to spot a seal or two swimming by to say hello. The house, nautically themed, creates the illusion that you are traveling aboard a lavish ship, without the seasickness of course. The spacious interior of the house has an air of tasteful class while maintaining a cozy rustic feel.
[D]oes this mean that the mermaids of myth and legend have never existed? Some argue that there is a link between the Sirens of Homer’s Odyssey and mythological mermaids; the only problem with this is that the Mediterranean Sea, where the Odyssey is set, completely dried up around 10 million years ago and only started to refill recently during the times of mankind. In early Homer references the sea was as dry as a desert. This means that ancient Western stories from the Mediterranean cannot have creatures of this kind in them brought over from ancient times. But the interesting thing about mermaids is that stories about them come from all over the world, from different countries and cultures; as if they are part of the human collective memory. In West Africa, Mami Wata is a Vodou goddess of the sea who appears in mermaid shape; she is kind to women and often blesses them with children, but has special sympathies for barren women.
