The wizards at Disney are at it again, updating the beloved animated classic "The Little Mermaid" into a huge, jaw-dropping, live musical spectacular for the entire family. Go "Under the Sea" with Ariel and her friends Sebastian and Flounder as she falls in love with the dashing Prince Eric and battles the evil witch Ursula. This is blockbuster theater at its finest, and you won't want to miss a second of it!

Some scholars believe mermaid tales developed from the imagery of Aphrodite, the goddess of love who emerged from the sea. Another possible source is the Chadean sea god Oannes. "It has been suggested that glimpses of sea-dwelling mammals such as the dugong or manatee, which suckle their young above the water's surface, contributed to the credibility of the lore" (Jones 1995, 301). The male counterpart of a mermaid is a merman.

The Sirens of Greek mythology are sometimes portrayed in later folklore as mermaid-like; in fact, some languages use the same word for both creatures. Other related types of mythical or legendary creature are water fairies (e.g. various water nymphs) and selkies, animals that can transform themselves from seals to humans.
