Mercury Sable

The 2008 Mercury Sable is a 4-door mid size sedan that is designed on Mercury Montego platform. It provides a much quieter ride than the almost identical Montego. The Sable is capable of carrying up to five passengers comfortably. The all-new Sable gets updated styling, a more powerful engine, a quieter cabin, a re-tuned suspension, a minor face-lift and more safety features as compared to its predecessor. Sable has got everything to offer you a pleasant balance between a smooth ride and responsive handling.

The Mercury Sable is startlingly agile, controllable, even sporty for such a relatively large and roomy family sedan. Even with the stoic Vulcan in the engine room, the Sable chassis proves itself anything but unemotional. Its finely tuned variable-assist rack-and-pinion steering provides just the right amount of boost (less of it as road speed increases) and a constant stream of information to the driver. This live wire steering combines with a finely tuned front suspension to deliver surprisingly sporting driving sensations. Driven to the extremes, the Sable takes the safest course, understeering to warn the driver that traction has been overcome. But before exceeding the tires' grip, this family taxi feels for all the world like a closet sports sedan.

The 2008 Mercury Sable has a nice range of interior features, and most reviews say it's well-equipped. Standard features include AM/FM in-dash CD player. An interesting optional feature is Ford's Sync Infotainment system. The system allows drivers and passengers to control the stereo and some other interior functions through voice commands. Car and Driver reports that the high-tech option is "a benefit of Ford's alliance with Microsoft."

The 2008 Mercury Sable, built on Volvo’s P2 architecture, has a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) quadruple 5-star crash test rating for all occupants in both frontal and side impacts. The Sable offers standard dual-stage front air bags; side seat-mounted air bags; Safety Canopy® side curtain air bags; and the Personal Safety System® that includes front-seat air bag deployment determination criteria, seat belt reminder system, and other features that combine to increase occupant protection. A tire-pressure-monitoring system, optional electronic stability control program, and optional automatic headlamps enhance the Sable’s list of safety features.

The 2008 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable will arrive in showrooms this summer bearing Top Safety Pick ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the government's highest available five-star ratings in all crash test categories. The IIHS' "Top Safety Pick" rating can only be earned by vehicles that achieve the best-available safety performance in frontal, side and rear collisions and offer electronic stability control. In addition to being the only large family cars to merit IIHS' Top Safety Pick rating, these sedans stand alone for ... earning five-star driver and passenger crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). "It's a true testament to the safety engineering of these vehicles that they achieved top crash test ratings from both IIHS and NHTSA," said Sue Cischke, senior vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering, Ford Motor Company. "Ford and Volvo worked together to leverage our technical and intellectual resources to create this outstanding vehicle architecture, and now it's better than ever. These cars offer it all: safety, power, spaciousness, comfort and great features, all at a great value."

As a family sedan, the 2008 Mercury Sable features many technologies that the manufacturer hopes will keep passengers occupied and comfortable on long trips. An optional DVD-based entertainment system provides hours of movie or game entertainment. Optional Sirius satellite radio provides an abundance of listening choices, and new for 2008 in the Mercury family is Ford Sync™, a program that was co-developed with Microsoft and is exclusive to Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. Sync is a customizable media system that allows the driver to integrate Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones and digital media players with the car and operate them using voice commands.—BJ Killeen
