In keeping with its commitment to make Crixivan available to people with HIV disease as soon as possible, Merck is providing Crixivan six months before full-scale supplies are available from an extremely aggressive manufacturing and introduction timetable. Unprecedented efforts are under way to complete two new facilities where Crixivan will be manufactured starting later this year.

Merck's profit for the first nine months of the year rose to $4.9 billion, or $2.24 per share, up 24 percent from $3.96 billion, or $1.81 per share, for the same period in 2006. Nine-month sales rose 8 percent to $17.95 billion.

Merck shares rose to $55.70 in pre-market trade from a Thursday close at $54.77 on the New York Stock Exchange. The stock is trading just below a four-year high of $58.36, reached earlier this month.
