The Merck/AAAS Undergraduate Science Research Program (USRP) is a national competitive awards program available in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Up to 15 new awards will be made annually. Each award provides up to $60,000 paid over three years at $20,000 per year for joint use by the biology and chemistry departments at each recipient institution. The funding supports research stipends for undergraduate students and ancillary programs that foster interactions between these departments.

Merck/Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals is a joint venture between Merck & Co., Inc. and Schering-Plough Corporation formed to develop and market in the United States new prescription medicines in cholesterol management. The collaboration was expanded to include worldwide markets (excluding Japan).
Merck and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals - are engaged in a multi-year collaboration to develop and commercialize RNAi therapeutics for ocular diseases. This is one of two strategic alliances between Merck and Alnylam. The Alnylam investor relations website states that, "Under the terms of the agreement, Alnylam will receive an initial cash payment from Merck and can receive additional cash payments upon the achievement of specified progress milestones. Cash payments to Alnylam could collectively total $19.5 million. In addition, Merck and Alnylam will jointly fund the development of, and share the profits from, any RNAi therapeutics for the United States market that result from the collaboration. In one of the most comprehensive remediation settlement agreements for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Merck will pay $10 million to put into place systems that will prevent future dangerous discharges at their facility. Merck will spend approximately $9 million for extensive environmental projects. A consent decree requires Merck to pay $1,575,000 in penalties and civil damages for past violations divided as follows: $750,000 to the United States; $750,000 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; $75,000 to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

At the conclusion of the remaining resolutions presented for consideration the preliminary votes were counted.In order to continue pursuing the Merck resolution, 3% of the vote would be needed. Early numbers which are not final since they do not include all proxy statements indicated that the HLI Resolution had won by gaining over 60 million votes with 4.38% of the shares.

Merck, based in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, rose 43 cents to $57.73 at 10:08 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading yesterday. The shares are up 32 percent for the year. Crucell fell 90 cents, or 7.1 percent, to 11.99 euros in Amsterdam. Its shares are down 38 percent this year.
